First Coast health officials say the process of signing up for a health care plan on the federal Health Insurance Marketplace exchange is getting easier.So-called health care navigators are available locally through the Health Planning Council of Northeast Florida and other health related non-profit organizations to help residents sign up.
Navigator Heather Hernandez said she’s been able to sign up several people to health insurance policies over the past few weeks, including her mother-in-law.
"She qualified for a $511 a month tax credit," she said. "So there's actually plans for her that are free. Low deductibles, even some platinum plans are $100 for her and she's a smoker that's 54-years old."
Darryl Smith signed up for a health insurance plan along with one of his friends. He said he was given several options to choose from and found a plan that cost less than $100 a month.
The enrollment deadline to have health insurance coverage by Jan. 1 is Dec. 23.
