Florida State College at Jacksonville is getting a $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to help “under represented” students stay enrolled and graduate.

“’Under-represented’ typically refers to ethnic minorities and students who may not have the financial means to complete their education,” said Angela Browning, who oversees strategic priorities at FSCJ.

One of the ways the money could be spent is on software called Single Stop.

“It really specializes in connecting students to outside supports in the community. So whatever community services they might need, whether that would be mental health services or financial aid of any sort, or food bank… food insecurities that could be addressed,” Browning said.

Eighty percent of FSCJ’s students attend part-time. Many of the students also hold down full-time jobs and have children to support, according to Browning.

The $2 million dollar federal grant will be spread out over five years.
