A former Florida Supreme Court justice could be on President Donald Trump’s list of potential nominees to fill the seat left open by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Ginsburg died Friday at the age of 87.
Multiple news outlets, including the Tampa Bay Times, are reporting Barbara Lagoa is one of the top names up for consideration to replace Ginsburg. Lagoa served on Florida’s Supreme Court for less than a year before President Donald Trump nominated her to a serve on the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.
In a note to her granddaughter, Ginsbug said her “most fervent wish” was for her replacement to be named by the next elected president. But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says he is preparing for a quick vote on Ginsburg’s replacement.
Meanwhile, flags throughout Leon County and across the country are flying at half-staff in honor of Ginsburg.
Governor Ron DeSantis sent out an order requiring all United States and State of Florida flags to be flown at half-staff “to honor her memory and recognize her lifetime of service to our great nation.” Flags at all local and state buildings, installations, and grounds will stay at half-staff until Ginsburg’s internment.
In Tallahassee, leaders are taking to social media to share what they admired most about the justice.
“Justice Ginsburg was a trailblazer, a role model, and an unwavering fighter for equality. Our nation owes her a debt of gratitude for her tireless service,” Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey wrote on Twitter.
