Give Blood: Shortages Critical During July 4th Holiday

The Blood Alliance, the only supplier of blood to dozens of area hospitals, is asking for the public's help.

"United We Care" blood drives are happening in Orange Park and St. Augustine on Saturday, June 22, to help build the community’s blood supply prior to the Fourth of July holiday. Organizers say critical shortages of several different blood types are driving the effort.

"It is vitally important to head into the holiday weekend with a robust supply, to ensure our local hospitals have blood available to treat patients in need, at a time when most people are busy with holiday activities," says spokeswoman Odette Struys.

Struys says all registered donors will be entered into a random drawing to win two Daytona Coke 400 race tickets scheduled for July 6, 2013, and other giveaways while supplies last.
