Jacksonville Legal Aid Receives HUD Funds To Fight Housing Discrimination

Jacksonville Area Legal Aid, Inc. is one of six organizations in Florida set to receive funds totaling more than $2 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to reduce housing discrimination.

The Jacksonville group will get a total of $774,750 for three programs — private enforcement of federal fair housing complaints, a lending discrimination fund, and public education campaigns.

Funded through HUD’s Fair Housing Initiatives Program (FHIP), the grants are designed to help enforce the Fair Housing Act through investigation and testing of alleged discriminatory practices.

“Ending housing discrimination requires that we support the law of the land and protect the housing rights of individuals and families who would be denied those rights,” said HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan in a statement.

Other organizations receiving part of the $2,998,306 in grants include those in Daytona Beach, Tampa, West Palm Beach, Melbourne, and Lantana.
