Jags Fans Will Vote To Name Jacksonville Jaguar Cub

The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens

The Jacksonville Jaguars and the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens are hoping fans will help name a baby jaguar born last month.

Starting today, fans from across the country will be able to vote online to dub the new cub with one of five names: Khan, Shad, Jaxson, Jax, or Pounce de Leon.

The jaguar cub, born at the zoo on July 18, shares his birthday with Jaguars owner Shad Kahn.

"With all of Northeast Florida eagerly awaiting the start of the Jags season and the Zoo's 100-Year Anniversary Celebration, we felt this was the perfect opportunity to involve the entire community," said Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens executive director Tony Vecchio, in a release.

"We look at this cub as more than a mascot for the Jags and for the Zoo. We'd like to think of him as the City of Jacksonville's mascot."

The zoo also announced that in response to the popularity of the cub with city residents that have installed a monitor that will allow visitors to see live footage of the cub with it's mother, Zassi.

Officials say the monitor will show the same camera view zoo keepers have to monitor the cub's development, which is not normally made available to the public.

The cub, the 50th jaguar to be born at the zoo, completed his first wellness check earlier this month. The check-up was attended Jaguars center Brad Meester, his wife Jamie, and their six daughters.

The voting form can be accessed online at the Jaguar's website.
