The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp have indefinitely postponed the start of the team’s 2020 season along with two job fairs that we’re originally scheduled for March 14 and 17.

Earlier in the day Major League Baseball (MLB) announced that spring training has been suspended and the start of the 2020 regular season will be pushed back by at least two weeks.

“This action is being taken in the interests of the safety and well-being of our players, clubs and our millions of loyal fans,” MLB announced in a statement.

A short time later, Minor League Baseball announced it would also be delaying its season.

“The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp are fully supportive of Minor League Baseball's decision to suspend the beginning of the 2020 season. The health and safety of our fans, players, staff and partners will always be our top priority. We will communicate additional details as soon as they become available in this continually-evolving situation," the Jumbo Shrimp said in a statement.

The Jumbo Shrimp’s season was previously scheduled to begin on April 9 in Jackson, Miss., against the Braves.

The home opener had been scheduled for April 15 against the Biloxi Shuckers.

“The Jumbo Shrimp will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and follow guidance from public health authorities and city and state officials in preparation for the 2020 baseball season at 121 Financial Ballpark,” said Jumbo Shrimp spokesman Scott Kornberg in an email to WJCT News Thursday afternoon.
