Key West holds a lot of parties, parades and even athletic events where people dress up in all forms - including in tutus. Now there's a new initiative to make that happen even more often.
On New Year's Day — which was Tuesday — Christa Hunt was getting people organized for a ride on a Conch Train. Most of them were wearing tutus.
"It's Tutu Tuesday — let's have a good time!" she said. "Let's make it happy!"
The train ride was part of the kickoff party for Tutu Tuesdays in Key West. It started at a pier on Key West harbor, at 2:22 p.m., naturally.
"We want our whole community, our locals and our visitors, every Tuesday just to put on a tutu," said Hunt, one of the organizers. Her day job is as artistic director of the Key West Burlesque Theater Troupe.
Tutus are frequently seen around town on people not performing ballet. People bring them out for parades, parties and costume runs. And the annual Tutu Tuesday party during Fantasy Fest has become one of the most popular events in that time period, especially among locals.
An official city proclamation declaring every Tuesday in Key West to be Tutu Tuesday has been delayed — for now.
