After a nearly 50-year career at The Florida Times-Union, former editorial page editor Mike Clark is being honored at a special event Thursday night, April 1.

While at the T-U, Clark spent 15 years as a reader advocate and another 15 as editorial page editor.

He addressed the challenges currently facing a free press on Wednesday’s First Coast Connect with Melissa Ross.

Clark also praised the First Amendment Foundation, which tracks legislation in Tallahassee and fights attempts to make the government less transparent.

“So we are very lucky in the state to have some very aggressive sunshine laws, but we will lose them if we don’t have groups like the First Amendment Foundation to keep the Legislature from rolling them back,” Clark said.

Thursday night’s virtual tribute for Clark will raise money to benefit the First Amendment Foundation.

The event starts at 6 p.m. Guests can register at floridafaf.org.

The entire interview with Clark can be heard on Wednesday’s First Coast Connect with Melissa Ross, which encores Wednesday at 8 p.m. on WJCT News 89.9.

Bill Bortzfield can be reached at bbortzfield@wjct.org or on Twitter at @BortzInJax.

Michelle Corum joined WJCT as "Morning Edition" host in 2012 and has worked in public broadcasting as an announcer and reporter for public radio stations in Lawrence, Kansas, and Interlochen, Michigan. She also manages WJCT's Radio Reading Service for sight-impaired listeners.
