JACKSONVILLE – The Main Street Bridge rehabilitation project in downtown Jacksonville will begin this week.
The project includes replacement of several major mechanical components but a temporary operating system will be installed to allow the bridge to remain operational while the mechanical work is completed.
The project also includes replacement of the entire electrical control system, which operates the moveable bridge about 1,400 times annually.
Other improvements include replacement of the traffic gates, sidewalk gates, lightning protection system and closed circuit television cameras which give operators at the Regional Transportation Management Center live views of traffic conditions.
Detour signs will be posted when a bridge closure is required, and signs on Interstate 95 will alert motorists of lane/bridge closures. “Overhead Bridge Repair” signs will be installed to notify marine traffic of operations.
Sidewalk access will be maintained at all times. A temporary work platform will be installed above the travel lanes and below the control house to minimize the need for lane closures. Drivers should still expect intermittent lane and bridge closures throughout the duration of the project.
M&J Construction Company of Tarpon Springs is the contractor. The Florida Department of Transportation’s $10.7 million project is expected to be complete in spring 2017.
