More Than 40% Of Jacksonville Families Are Headed By Single Parents

Single-parent households are growing more common across the nation and in Jacksonville.

A new report by Smartest Dollar, a review site for financial products and services, found that in Jacksonville 43.5% of families are headed by a single parent. That’s higher than the Florida average of 35.7% and the national average of 32.1%.

Among large cities, Jacksonville had the highest percentage of single-parent households in Florida, followed by Miami with 42.9%. Among all large U.S. cities, Jacksonville and Miami ranked No. 16 and No. 17, respectively.

Cleveland had the most single-parent households among large U.S. cities: 83.3%.

The growth of single-parent households has been steadily rising since the 1950s, according to a chart put together by Smartest Dollar, using U.S. Census Bureau data.

Smartest Dollar cited a recent Pew Research Center report that found children in the U.S. are more likely to live in a single-parent household than children in at least 129 other countries, including China, India, and all of Europe.

Geographically, Southern states tend to have the highest percentage of single-parent households, with Louisiana leading the nation at just over 40%. Mississippi, South Carolina, Arkansas, Florida and Georgia all reported percentages of at least 35%.
