There have been 17 homicides in Jacksonville since August 1, following 15 homicides in July.

Jacksonville Sheriff John Rutherford says a new agreement with the Nassau County Sheriff's office will help free up time for his officers to investigate such crimes.

The Cops Without Borders program allows Nassau and Duval County deputies and officers to cross the county boarder while pursuing suspects or investigating a crime without first having to seek permission.

"When we're running on a call and we have to go into Nassau County we don't have to stop and wait and get permission." Rutherford said.

"So this is why Cops Without Borders is so important. It allows us to fight these crimes and capture these criminals in a more efficient manner."

The program is already in place between Duval and Clay Counties and Rutherford says it has been very successful.

Rutherford it's also helpful because of the job cuts in his department in recent years his officers are stretched this running from call to call. He says by being able to cross the border freely it will save time.
