No Plans? No Problem! Things To Do This Weekend On The First Coast

Brinkhoff/Mögenburg

Tony Award-winning theater, craft beer, and a chance to help fight crime and cancer are on tap this weekend on the First Coast.

Friday, February 21 - Sunday, Feb. 23  — A heart-warming tale of loyalty and friendship, and winner of five 2011 Tony Awards, "War Horse" tells the story of young Albert and his beloved horse Joey.

At its heart are astonishing life-sized puppets created by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, that bring to life breathing, galloping, charging horses strong enough for men to ride. "War Horse" is on stage at the Moran Theater at the Times Union Center. More info online at Jacksonville-Theater.com.

Saturday, February 22 — The Riverside Craft Beer Fest starts at noon on Saturday under the Fuller-Warren Bridge in conjunction with the Farmer's Market at Riverside Arts Market (FRAM) and will feature craft beer from local brewers along with the work of craft breweries from around the country. Food trucks will be serving and live music will be featured. More info on Facebook.

Saturday, February 22 — Join human trafficking awareness advocates Rethreaded at their Barnett Street warehouse to raise funds to employ, train and restore women coming out of the sex trade in Jacksonville.

Organizers say that simply attending this semi-formal event is doing your part to bring freedom to those caught in the sex trade. There will be live music, dinner, and an open bar. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. Tickets and more info on Facebook.

Sunday, February 23 — Donna Deegan's famous national marathon to "finish" breast cancer, 26.2 With Donna: The National Marathon to Fight Breast Cancer, steps off Sunday in Ponte Vedra.

The marathon, half-marathon and marathon relay will start at 7:30 a.m. from 200 ATP Tour Blvd. in Ponte Vedra Beach. The route winds through four beautiful beach communities on historic coastal A1A, over the Intracoastal Waterway Bridge (just once!) on Butler Blvd., and finishes at Mayo Clinic. More info at BreastCancerMarathon.com.
