The captain of a guided missile cruiser based at Naval Station Mayport was relieved of command this week.

The Navy said USS Philippine Sea Captain Erica Hoffman was removed from her post due to a “loss of confidence in her ability to command.”

The U.S. Naval Institute News reported the Navy removed Hoffman after a cruiser under her command spilled close to 4,000 gallons of diesel into the York River in Virginia on May 7.  Most of the fuel was contained by booms.

Capt. Robert Thompson will take over for Hoffman, who had been at the post for about a year.
