Pride Month and LGBTQ Rights/Protections in Florida

Southwest Florida Pride in 2017 at the Alliance for the Arts
Rachel Iacovone, WGCU
Southwest Florida Pride in 2017 at the Alliance for the Arts

As we approach the end of Pride Month and the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, which are largely considered a sentinel catalyst to the gay rights movement, we explore why pride events continue to exist and how they’ve changed over the years.

We’ll also look into the current status of rights and protections for LGBTQ Floridians under current state statute as well as ongoing efforts to create anti-discrimination protection ordinances through local municipalities here in Southwest Florida.  We’ll speak with openly gay state Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith, D-Winter Park, former openly gay state representative and current Senior Policy Director with Equality Florida Joe Saunders, and activist and founder of the non-profit Visuality, Inc., Arlene Goldberg.
