Florida’s senators want to drop the confederate flag from the chamber’s seal.  The proposed rule change passed committee Thursday unanimously.Listen here.

The Senate seal currently includes five flags—the U.S. flag, a confederate flag, and one each from England, Spain and France.  But Thursday the Senate rules committee unanimously agreed to replace the confederate one with the current state flag.  Sen. Darren Soto (D-Kissimmee) says the change is a better reflection of the chamber.

“It’s time for us to have the seal be consistent with our values,” Soto says.  “We can’t revise history and choose which moments in our history to forget, but we can choose what we highlight in our seal.

The rule change will take effect with a two thirds vote once the chamber reconvenes on the Senate floor.
