SLIDESHOW: Jacksonville Graphic Novelists Tell Budding Artists 'Just Do It'

Local interest in graphic novels is booming. Three Jacksonville-based graphic novelists recently appeared on First Coast Connect to talk about it.

Emmy Award winning filmmaker Frank Goodin is new to the graphic novel scene. His first graphic novel, "Life or Death," is  about a family living in poverty in Jacksonville. Goodin said the book was a cheaper way to tell the story than to attempt the fundraising necessary for a feature film.

Rachel Pandich, creator of "Aspire" and "Skin Crawling Comics," said Florida breeds creativity. It shows in "Skin Crawling Comics" - a horror based comic book anthology that oozes creativity. Pandich is one of many writers of the ongoing anthology. Out of the 40 contributors to the comic, 30 are from Florida, and 10 are from Jacksonville.

James Greene, adjunct professor at the University of North Florida, teaches a class on graphic novels and is an author himself. He tells his students the best thing to do is to finish the book.

All three authors agreed that the best piece of advice they could give to budding artists is, "Just do it."
