St. Johns River State College Receives $20,000 From Florida For Scholarships

As many as 30 St. Johns River State College students will have an easier time, thanks to a $22,000 check to the school from the Florida College System Foundation.

State Education Commissioner Pam Stewart presented the check in St. Augustine Wednesday to college President Joe Pickens.

She says the money will go toward scholarships for students enrolled in health-care programs and for first generation students.

“Life gets in the way of a lot of things, especially for first generation students who may not have the home support that I certainly had and that many other students have,” Stewart said. “You know they have to overcome the obstacles of life on their own or with less support.”

College officials say the average scholarship award will be around $750.

St. Johns River State College has campuses in Orange Park, Palatka and St. Augustine.

Classes there start next week.
