In Their Own Words: Jasmine Byard

This week marks a milestone for many high school seniors across Duval County: Graduation.

We continue our graduate series with a lesson in determination and resilience from First Coast High School senior and this year's Miss First Coast winner Jasmine Byard.

Byard is among the more than 1,400 homeless students living and learning in Duval County. But the trials of life have not hindered Byard; they've served as motivation, she says.

This fall, she'll head to Jacksonville University with aspirations of becoming a neuroscientist someday.

She shared her thoughts on her high school journey and the road ahead with WJCT's Rhema Thompson.

This story is part of American Graduate - a public media initiative made possible by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to help local communities implement and identify solutions to address the high school dropout crisis.

You can follow Rhema Thompson on Twitter @RhemaThompson.

Rhema Thompson began her post at WJCT on a very cold day in January 2014 and left WJCT to join the team at The Florida Times Union in December 2014.
