Trick-Or-Treat Alternatives; COVID Vaccine Trials; OneJax; Silkie’s In Springfield

Oct 29, 2020

Halloween is Saturday and many parents are struggling to decide the safest way to celebrate. Experts agree that allowing children to go door to door, foraging in a bucket of goodies, is too dangerous amidst a pandemic.

Last week, the Centers for Disease Control updated its guidelines for celebrating safely. The CDC's  recommendations for lowest risk activities emphasize virtual events and ones with members of your household.

Dr. Jeff Goldhagen, Chief of the Division of Community and Societal Pediatrics at UF Health Jacksonville, joined us to discuss the risks of trick-or-treating and some fun alternatives.

COVID-19 Clinical Trials In Jacksonville

Jacksonville patients now have the opportunity to take part in clinical trials for a COVID-19 vaccine. Last week, pharmaceutical company Moderna released its federal contract to produce a vaccine as part of the worldwide race to end COVID-19. Due to heavy redactions, the contract’s terms are obscured.

We spoke with Dr. Michael Koren, CEO of the Jacksonville Center for Clinical Research, about the trial and how to get involved.

OneJax

This weekend, a coalition of faith leaders will attempt to bring the community together through a virtual OneJax event.

Faith leaders throughout Jacksonville will join OneJax Executive Director Kyle Reese to encourage civil discourse. Reese joined us this morning for a preview of the event.

Silkie’s Chicken And Champagne Bar

Celebrity Chef Kenny Gilbert first made a name for himself on "Top Chef " and other Food Network shows. Now, he is working on a new fast casual restaurant concept here in Jacksonville.

Chef Gilbert and his wife Anna will open Silkie’s Chicken and Champagne Bar, located in Historic Springfield, next month. The menu will feature high-low comfort food, such as fried chicken, sandwiches, and biscuits, alongside high end champagnes.

Chef Gilbert joined us to talk about the menu, mood, and a potential soft opening date.
