UNF Poll: Voters Like Mayor Curry, But They're Not Sure His Pension Tax Is A Win

A new University of North Florida poll of likely Duval County voters shows support for a pension tax plan is not universal.

Mayor Lenny Curry’s priority tax extension has support from just  41 percent of respondents.

That leaves a third of voters at least slightly opposed to the tax extension, and just over a quarter of respondents who don’t know how they feel about the sales tax.

Support and opposition are relatively the same among Democrats, Republicans and unaffiliated voters. Curry has just over a month to change some unknowns to yeses ahead of the August 30th vote.

The Public Opinion Research Laboratory poll also found 69 percent of likely voters approve of Mayor Curry overall, regardless of party affiliation. Jacksonville Sherriff Mike Williams also has widespread approval: 72 percent of respondents like his job performance.

When asked about the most important problem facing Jacksonville, 38 percent said crime, 16 percent think it’s the economy, and 15 percent said education. Broken down by race, more than half of black voters, 54 percent, said crime is the most important problem, compared with 34 percent of white voters.
