Nearly 30 children in storm-devastated Northwest Florida will be sleeping a lot better than anytime since last year's Hurricane Michael. That's because of a bed-building effort in Tallahassee this weekend.
Dozens of volunteers from area Rotary Clubs helped out. One was Tallahassee Sunrise Rotary Club member Bo Schmitz, whose day job is running a hotel. He admitted that has little connection to carpentry.
"They do a great job with the instruction," he said, by way of complimenting the event organizers. "You don't really need any skill. We just came and offered our help and hands and it was very easy."
Sam Varn turned his Awards4You business parking lot off Lafayette Street into a bunk bed production site on Saturday, March 18. The project is under the auspices of the charitable organization Sleep in Heavenly Peace. John Cousins heads up the local chapter.
"We built 14 bunk beds today," he said as the participants finished the cleanup phase of the work. "Twenty-eight kids will be off the floor in Blountstown and Marianna today. (They're) hurricane victims and when I'm getting the requests, it breaks your heart. But they'll have a place to sleep."
Cousins added the bunk bed build-a-thons will continue as long as the need is there.
