Friday is International Women's Day - but it's also another big day for women: the International Women's Collaboration Brew Day.
Started by Unite Brew, the organization for female brewers, the idea is to celebrate women in the beer industry by hosting brewing parties around the world on International Women's Day. Tarpon River Brewing co-founder, Lisa Siegel, spent the day making beer with women from South Florida and Orlando - ahead of a benefit party at the brewery.
Women working with beer have made an impact, she says, and she feels supported by men in the industry.
"You're either a good brewer or you're not," Siegel said. "And if you're a good brewer, male [or] female, no one really looks at you like, 'oh you're a female brewer.' "
Libbie Dailey, is a brewer at another brewery center in Fort Lauderdale, The Craft Beer Cartel. She's been brewing a special American pale ale with Siegel for the celebration of women who brew.
Dailey said, she loves the beer scene across South Florida, because it brings diverse flavors.
"People don't seem to be afraid to step outside the box or incorporate unique ingredients which is, I guess, part of the theme this year for the International Women's Collaboration Brew Day," Dailey said. "It's Unite, Forage. So they really encourage us to go and find ingredients in our local environment, which is why we went with mango and coconut."
The event starts at 7 p.m. at Tarpon River Brewing in Downtown Fort Lauderdale. A local female punk-rock band, the Vagnauts will be performing.
Some of the proceeds from merchandise sales will go to the Pink Boots Society, which aims to help women advance careers in the beer industry through training and education.
