Cypress trees reflect in water in the Okefenokee Swamp Wildlife Refuge in Georgia.

The Okefenokee Swamp, the largest black water swamp in North America, is crucial to the St. Marys and Suwannee rivers. However, plans for a nearby strip mine are advancing, despite growing opposition from environmentalists. The worry is that the mining might breach the swamp’s eastern boundary, causing water outflow issues for the St. Marys River.

  • Joshua Marks, Atlanta-based environmental attorney.
  • Mark Woods, columnist at the Florida Times Union and author of Lassoing the Sun: A Year in America’s National Parks.
