Challenger Virginia Fuller (R) was no match for incumbent Rep. Al Lawson (D). Lawson won re-election in Florida’s fifth congressional district by a whopping thirty percent.
Rep. Al Lawson (D) was all but sure to win re-election for his second term in Congress. Lawson was already looking to his next term after edging out a win in a tight primary against former Jacksonville mayor Alvin Brown. In a speech, he told a rowdy crowd he’s excited to get back to work.
“You know, we have a tough road ahead when we get back to Washington because we have a lot of issues," said Lawson. "Some of the main issues: immigration is going to be at the forefront and healthcare is always at the forefront. These are some issues that we need to resolve.”
Lawson also wants to work on reducing student debt and pass gun reform. He’s pushing for greater bipartisanship in Congress.
“What we have to do is to try to work with our colleagues on the other side of the aisle to really get things done," said Lawson. "The president is going to have to recognize the fact that he can’t just push things through. And, you know, if it’s good legislation we can work with him.”
Lawson saidhe’s excited to take a day off after a long campaign, but admitted he’s got his work cut out for him this term.
