Florida A&M University head football coach Willie Simmons says his son was the victim of a shooting that took place on Perry Street just after 3:00 a.m. Sunday morning.

Florida A&M University President Larry Robinson signed a one-year contract extension Thursday, ensuring he will continue heading the school through 2021. Robinson’s original contract expires at the end of this year. FAMU board member David Lawrence Jr. says Robinson has turned the school around.

“Boy, it was a muddle five years ago. We were a long way from anywhere," said Lawrence Jr. "I think Dr. Robinson and his team have done marvelous work and I’m proud to work for him and the rest of FAMU.”

A 9-foot tall, 15-hundred-pound Rattlesnake now stands guard in front of Florida A&M University’s new student success center on Wahnish Way. The bronze sculpture weighs as much as a cow. FAMU Student Affairs Vice President William Hudson says the response to the statue has been great so far.

The man who detonated bombs on Florida A&M University’s campus in 1999 will not be released from prison. U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle resentenced Lawrence Lombardi to 54 years.

FAMU Opts Out Of Football Amid COVID-19 Concerns

Florida A&M University has chosen to forego the 2021 spring seasons for football, indoor track and field, and volleyball. The announcement leaves softball, baseball, and men’s and women’s basketball as the remaining sports. The Rattlers rival Bethune Cookman University made the decision to forego all its sports last month, leaving the football team with only 4 remaining games.

The school cites health and safety concerns due to COVID-19 as reasons for canceling the season.

Florida A & M University President Larry Robinson says the college is considering how many online courses it should continue offering once the coronavirus pandemic clears up. The school's previous plan was to teach 15% of its classes online by 2022. But the pandemic is accelerating that plan. Now 75% of FAMU's courses are online.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will be giving $1.5 million to Florida A&M University to create a separate COVID-19 testing and processing laboratory facility for its students, faculty, and staff.

The announcement follows the state’s decision to privatize the current testing site at the school’s Bragg Memorial stadium.

“We have had on our campus, since April 25th, a community-based state-operated COVID-19 testing site and tested well over 56,000 [people],” said FAMU President, Larry Robinson.

FAMU Ends Curfew

Students at Florida A&M University will no longer be under curfew. The Dean of Students Bomani Spell made the announcement Friday. He says the positivity rate has declined to a manageably low level. Campus gatherings have also been expanded to 30 participants.

The rules of wearing masks, social distancing, and practicing good hygiene are still part of the students’ guidelines for now.

Students will still have to adhere to the guidelines or possibly face suspension.

Florida A&M University’s Developmental Research School is sending students home for two weeks after several positive cases of COVID-19 on its campus.

The university says one teacher and one non-teaching staffer tested positive for the virus, along with two students. More than half a dozen teachers are being asked to quarantine and volleyball and football games set for this week have been postponed.

The school is also suspending in-person classes for two weeks.

Florida A&M University will place students who are exposed to the coronavirus in campus apartments but the school is mum about identifying which ones students will be placed in. Since the start of August. 14 students and nearly 20 staff members have tested positive for Covid-19. Two students have already been moved and placed in quarantine.

FAMU To Receive $50,000 To Buy Laptops For Students

Florida A & M University is using a $50,000 grant to buy more than 60 laptops for students who need one. The college was one of five historically black universities to be granted money from Vanguard, an investment advising firm.

FAMU's Shawnte Friday-Stroud says after switching to remote learning amid the pandemic, students didn't have access to computer labs, which led the university to realize that many students needed personal laptops to support the software teachers use.

Larry Robinson Named FAMU's 12th President

After serving three times as the university's interim leader, Larry Robinson has been named the 12th president of Florida A&M University in a unanimous vote by the school's trustees.

Florida A&M University’s new president is still making the rounds getting to know Tallahassee. In a Tuesday address to the Economic Club of Florida Elmira Mangum says while most of the issues in higher education are universal, there are some unique quirks to Florida.

"[The] biggest surprise? It was the [Sunshine] Amendment. My first 48 hours...(laughter)" she said. "Everything else in higher education is Par.”

Dozier dig reveals bone, coffin parts: The excavation of the site of the former Dozier School for Boys in Marianna has turned up a coffin handle and hardware and skull and teeth fragments. (CNN) 

It’s been nearly two years since the sound of Florida A&M University’s band was last heard. Now the ensemble is back, and  band and university leaders say it’s going to take a lot of work to prove to the world that times have changed.

This time around, FAMU’s Marching 100 band is closer to its official name—with a current roster of 198 musicians. That’s about half the size the band that, in 2011, was placed on suspension following the hazing death of drum major Robert Champion. Also new is the terminology.  there are no more “drum majors” in the Marching 100.
