St. Augustine is looking for residents to be on a new committee tasked with updating the city’s building code to reduce flooding.

The City Commission on Monday agreed to form the five-member advisory committee. It will be chaired by Commissioner John Valdes, who has worked in the construction industry for decades.

More than 2,500 flood insurance policies bought in Florida after Hurricane Irma are expiring this year, including hundreds along the First Coast.

Heavy rains over the weekend, attributed partly to Tropical Storm Cristobal, which made landfall in Louisiana on Sunday night, led to flooding in several areas of Jacksonville.

Andrew Kennedy, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, said the highest recorded rainfall amount was 7.02 inches over a 24-hour period from Saturday to Sunday.

The city of Lawtey in Bradford County is one of 21 Florida communities impacted by Hurricane Irma that will be getting more than $84 million from the state for infrastructure improvement projects. Lawtey’s share will be $867,600.

According to a new report from Climate Central and Zillow, 2,659 homes (at a value of $871.9 million) in Duval County are at risk of coastal flooding by the year 2050 under an unchecked pollution scenario and 19,121 ($7.2 billion) could be underwater by 2100.

A Coastal Flood Advisory from the National Weather Service is in effect in the San Marco and Ortega neighborhoods of Jacksonville through at least the middle of next week.

Lindsay Hardee lives about a block away from the river in San Marco. She says the road has been so flooded, she found a fish in the road. And sure enough, a few yards away from where she’s standing, a six-inch gray fish is baking in the sun.

The National Weather Service in Jacksonville has issued a Tornado Warning for northern St. Johns County and southeastern Duval County until 12:45 p.m. 

A Flash Flood Warning has also been issued until 2:15 p.m. for both counties.

At 12:09 p.m. National Weather Service Meteorologists were tracking a waterspout near south Ponte Vedra Beach moving west at 20 mph.

This waterspout has the potential to contact local land areas at any time. For that reason a tornado warning has been issued for the local area.
