Florida Universities To Bolster Mental Health Services

Spurred by the state Board of Governors, Florida universities will hire 56 mental-health professionals this year and a total of 105 over the next four years.

Thrasher Gets Raise As FSU Moves Up In Rankings

With Florida State University moving closer to becoming a top-25 public university, the school's trustees have bumped up President John Thrasher's salary by seven percent and awarded him a $200,000 bonus.

Assistant state attorneys Bernie de la Rionda and Mark Caliel defended their department Thursday against accusations they send too many convicts to death row.

The University of North Florida’s Osprey Fountains is named one of the most luxurious student residence halls in the country by the online architectural design site DesignCurial.    

The London-based magazine surveyed more than 500 U.S. dorms to come up with its top 10 list.

Osprey Fountains’ tennis court, fitness center, putting green and indoor and outdoor pools helped land the dorm in the No. 10 spot.

Jacksonville businessman Ed Burr has been unanimously elected chair of Florida State University Board of Trustees.

Burr is president and CEO of the Jacksonville-based GreenPointe Holdings real estate company. The company builds homes, plans communities across Florida and manages several golf courses, according to its website.

Burr has served on the FSU board since 2011 and chaired the Academic Affairs Committee during the past year. He succeeds former Florida House Speaker Allan Bense as chairman.

  Florida's university system wants state lawmakers to holster the idea of allowing guns on campus.

A joint statement from the university system's Board of Governors, university police chiefs and the 12 public universities expresses opposition to a legislative proposal (SB 176 and HB 4005) that would allow people with concealed-firearms licenses to carry guns at state colleges and universities.

Former State Senator John Thrasher assumed his new role as President of Florida State University this week.  Thrasher says running a university is far different from running the legislature, and all of his actions are being scrutinized.
