Flagler Hospital has announced that it will henceforth be known as Flagler Health+ as it begins expanding its services into additional St. Johns County communities.

The legislative session collapsed Tuesday amid an increasingly bitter budget fight over health-care funding, with the House abruptly adjourning and going home in a move that killed scores of bills and deepened the divide between the House and the Senate.

Meanwhile, Gov. Rick Scott filed suit against the federal government to try to stop the Obama administration from linking $2.2 billion in funding for health-care providers to a potential expansion of Medicaid.

UF Health North is a new medical facility opening on Feb. 17 on Jacksonville’s Northside.

The design of the building is very modern, more like a hotel than a hospital. Natural light filters inside through terrarium-like rock gardens, and there are outdoor terraces where patients and families can get fresh air while waiting.

"We're going away from the institutional white-washing to a very welcoming atmosphere," says Mike Marzoug, operations manager for the UF Health North project.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, on any given day one in 25 hospitalized patients — 4 percent — is battling an infection picked up in a hospital or other healthcare facility.

Federal health officials are issuing audit reports and rushing to collect $267 million in alleged overpayments to some Florida hospitals to close the books on an old program, says Florida Hospital Association President Bruce Rueben.

FHA argues against a rush to judgment, saying some of the audits are still preliminary. Also, the group says, it’s unreasonable to expect hospitals to repay millions of dollars in one year.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The state Agency for Health Care Administration has filed suit in federal court in an attempt to inspect federal Veterans Affairs hospitals in Florida.

In the past month, Middle East respiratory syndrome has morphed from a little-known disease in the Arabian Peninsula to a major global health concern, with more than 300 cases in Saudi Arabia in April, 54 of them fatal.

Two cases have been reported in the U.S. as well — one in Indiana and one in Florida. Both men had worked in Saudi Arabia hospitals. So far, neither has spread the respiratory disease to others.
