JetBlue Airways will begin offering nonstop flights from Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) to New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA) starting this October, the airline announced Wednesday.

The Jacksonville International Airport is preparing for an expected influx of travelers as the holiday season approaches, although numbers are still expected to be significantly lower than years prior.

Jacksonville International Airport’s traffic has plunged from about 12,000 passengers on a normal day to approximately 400 a day since the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

Jacksonville Aviation Authority CEO Seeks To Regain International Service

When Jacksonville Aviation Authority CEO Mark VanLoh was a child in South Dakota, the airport in Sioux Falls was his playground.

“We used to go to the airport on Sundays after church to eat. We’d go watch the airplanes. My sister and I would run up and down the concourses,” VanLoh said.

He traces his 35-year career in aviation back to a single moment on the runway in his hometown — President John F. Kennedy’s arrival on Air Force One.

The Jacksonville airport will open a premium lounge early next year, if all goes to plan.
