Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams will be speaking at Jacksonville University tonight.

The school’s Public Policy Institute is hosting Williams as part of its classroom guest speaker series.

“The sheriff, I believe, will be addressing a wide range of criminal justice issues— everything from juvenile justice to potential homicide cases to the crime rate here in Jacksonville,” said Rick Mullaney, Public Policy Institute director.

Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams joined us to talk about how to protect citizens from random acts of terror.

After Thursday’s attack in Nice, France, Williams said the challenge for police officers is the balance of protecting citizens during an event without over-policing during the event.

Ken Jefferson for Sheriff

Jacksonville Sheriff candidate Ken Jefferson is being endorsed by the Coastal Florida Police Benevolent Association. Jefferson made the announcement today on a Northwest Jacksonville street corner where a 16-year-old was killed in a drive-by shooting last month.

He stresses the need for police to build trust in the community.  But one neighborhood man’s reaction to the news conference shows there’s a long road ahead toward that goal.
