With some justices appearing torn between legal precedents and the circumstances of the case, the state Supreme Court on Tuesday weighed whether Gov. Rick Scott should be able to appoint a replacement for a Northeast Florida judge who is stepping down at the end of the year.

First Coast voters have up to nine judges on their November ballots facing the question: Should they retain their jobs?

Several appeals judges and three Florida Supreme Court justices are on the November ballot. It’s called a merit retention election.

Florida will choose to either keep or terminate 22 District Court of Appeal judges from their positions. Determining who should stay and who should go may seem like a daunting task if a voter doesn’t even know what to look for in a judge.
