At a health care conference in Jacksonville Tuesday, Florida’s surgeon general said help is on the way for Duval and other counties dealing with the opioid crisis.

More than $27 million federal dollars will be used in the regions most affected by addiction and overdoses. Counties are expected to get the extra federal funds as soon as June.

On a conference call with Florida lawmakers Friday, Governor Rick Scott once again called on Congress to pass $2 billion in emergency Zika money.

Northeast Florida homeowners can help keep away the mosquitoes that carry the Zika virus. That’s what Duval County Health Department Director Kelli Wells told Jacksonville City Councilors Tuesday.

She says the tiny, flying insects tend to lay their eggs in relatively clean, small quantities of water.

Duval County’s overall health outcomes have deteriorated over the last year. That’s according to a new national survey of county health care.
