New Florida School Rule Leaves COVID-Exposure Quarantine Up To Parents

Pointing to a need to “minimize the amount of time students are removed from in-person learning,” the Florida Department of Health on Wednesday issued a revised rule that gives parents more authority to decide whether children go to school after being exposed to people who have COVID-19.

Despite his threat to withhold about $22,000 a month from Duval County Public Schools, Florida’s Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran has not yet withheld any state funds from the district in response to its student mask mandate.

St. Johns County Schools had recorded 881 COVID cases as of Thursday — more than 25 times the number of cases in the district after the first 14 school days of the 2020 school year. By the end of the third week of 2020-2021, just 35 students and staff had tested positive.

The Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) Board could lose board funding as soon as Thursday, according to a letter sent to Duval County Schools officials by Florida’s education commissioner.

The Episcopal School of Jacksonville is in a legal battle as several parents are suing over the right for their children to go without masks in the classroom.

Duval County public school students will be required to wear masks when they return to class after the Labor Day weekend  — unless they have a doctor’s note —  and those who don’t follow the district’s guidelines will face discipline.

Gov. Ron DeSantis and top state education officials are continuing to pursue a crackdown on school districts that don’t comply with a new Department of Health rule requiring that parents be allowed to opt out of student mask mandates amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

A St. Johns County Commissioner proposed a mandatory mask mandate during Tuesday’s special emergency meeting, but the motion failed as none of the other commissioners were willing to second the proposal, even as one of their colleagues is in “critical” condition due to complications from COVID-19.

Starting Monday, June 29 at 5 p.m., a mask mandate in Duval County goes into effect. At all indoor and public locations where social distancing isn’t possible, a mask will be required.
