Some teachers in Duval County are speaking out against a recent change to Florida’s education rules that they say will whitewash the teaching of American history. 

Robert E. Lee High School teacher Amy Donofrio — removed from her classroom in March after she refused to take down a Black Lives Matter flag from outside her classroom — said she believed she’d been ultimately fired based on a speech last week by state Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran.

As two Jacksonville schools were forced to temporarily switch to online distance learning amid COVID-19 outbreaks, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said he would like to see schools remain open.

The St. Johns County School Board voted unanimously Tuesday to push back the start of the school year until August 31, citing concerns related to the coronavirus and the upcoming Republican National Convention in Jacksonville.

The state is taking public input on new testing standards for Florida K-12 schools, as the Florida Department of Education works to overhaul Common Core following Gov.  Ron DeSantis’ Executive Order. Common Core is a set of academic standards in math and English that students are required to master.

School choice is a priority for the education advisory committee Gov.-elect Ron DeSantis has convened to help shape his policy goals.

The panel met for a second time in Tallahassee Friday.
