Duval School Board To Seek Outside Counsel

After the Duval County School Board’s half-cent sales tax referendum faced a roadblock this week at Tuesday’s Finance and Rules committee meetings, members say they want to take action.

At a meeting Thursday afternoon, Chairwoman Lori Hershey announced to board members that she scheduled a meeting with Jacksonville’s General Counsel Jason Gabriel.

The Clay County Commission Tuesday rejected placing a half-cent sales tax for school funding on the ballot this year, according to WJCT-News partner The Florida Times Union.

Nearly 70 residents spoke at Tuesday’s meeting, most of them to urge the Jacksonville City Council to let voters decide on a half-cent sales tax the School Board is requesting to help repair and replace Duval County’s aging schools.

State Reaches Deal With Amazon; Online Retailer To Bring 3,000 Jobs To Florida

TALLAHASSSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida has reached a deal to bring major Internet retailer Amazon to the state.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott announced Thursday that Amazon would bring more than 3,000 jobs to the state between now and 2016. The company is poised to spend more than $300 million on new warehouses.

The governor had previously said no to a deal to bring Amazon to the state. He had expressed concerns that signing off on such a deal would result in tax increases for Floridians.
