State Rep. Jason Fischer (R-Jacksonville) is calling for an elected Duval County school superintendent. 

Fischer had been seeking support for a proposal to let Jacksonville’s mayor appoint members of the Duval County School Board, but on Friday he announced he’s amended that bill to allow for an elected superintendent instead.

Duval County’s three school board races were decided Tuesday. Elizabeth Andersen, Darryl Willie and Charlotte Joyce will take seats on the seven-member board.

Many Duval County voters saw school board candidates on their primary ballots, and they’ll see those races again in November. That’s because in all three nonpartisan races, none of the candidates garnered enough support — the required 50 percent plus one vote — to win Tuesday.

The last day for Duval County School Board candidates to qualify for the ballot is Friday.

With four seats up for grabs, three candidates have raised substantially more money than the 11 others.

Duval Schools Superintendent Nikolai Vitti received an evaluation of “effective” from school board members Thursday.

It’s the same rating he gave himself earlier this month.

The Duval County District 4 School Board race was expected to be a close one, but it quickly became clear Tuesday that voters wanted to keep incumbent Paula Wright in office.

With 53 percent of the votes from the 32 precincts of District 4, Paula Wright will keep her seat as School Board Member.

After months of aggressive campaigning, countless community appearances and posters, it only took about 30 minutes after polls closed for the primary celebrations to begin.
