More than 10,000 surfers and supporters are asking St. Johns County officials to reopen public beaches on a limited basis, while another petition is asking Gov. Ron DeSantis to declare surfing an “essential activity" statewide.

Saturday afternoon St. Johns County announced that all public beaches in the county would be closed to the public starting at 6:00 a.m. Sunday, and remain closed until further notice.


At the time of this story's publication, the total number of COVID-19 cases in Florida had risen to 1,412, with St. Johns County seeing its first confirmed death attributed to the virus.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered Tuesday that all bars and nightclubs close for the next 30 days to help stop the spread of coronavirus. The city of St. Augustine is taking that a step further by banning alcohol sales at restaurants.

The man killed in a shootout with St. Johns County Sheriff’s deputies Wednesday has been identified as 38-year-old Joshua Noles of Volusia County.

A 63-year old man has tested positive for coronavirus in St. Johns County.

The man is a New York resident who traveled to Florida to attend Daytona Bike Week in Daytona Beach. His marks the first positive case in the county, where he was isolated before attending Bike Week and remains isolated today, according to health officials.

A new high school will soon be built in St. Johns County, which in turn is going to impact the attendance zones of the county’s existing high schools.

While schools and government offices in St. Johns County will be closed Monday for Presidents Day, it will be business as usual for folks who work in that county’s elections office. 

Elections Supervisor Vicky Oakes said she chose to stay open on the federal holiday to accommodate voters.

Baptist HealthPlace To Open In Nocatee Next Summer

Baptist HealthPlace announced Thursday it will open a health and wellness center at Nocatee in St. Johns County by summer 2020.

Starting this week and continuing through mid-November, St. Augustine drivers will see lane shifts and intermittent closures along West Castillo Avenue to allow for heavy equipment and machinery maneuvering due to construction at the site of the future San Marco Hotel.
