The Candy Apple Café & Cocktails at Sweet Pete’s Candy in downtown Jacksonville at Hemming Park has permanently closed.

Sweet Pete’s and the Candy Apple Café temporarily closed Downtown as the 115-year-old building the business occupies is being repaired.

Tuesday on First Coast Connect we spoke with WJCT’s business analyst John Burr about the future of CSX in the wake of the death of CEO Hunter Harrison (00:55).

The Jacksonville City Council Finance Committee approved just under $58,000 Wednesday to fund Hemming Park through the rest of the fiscal year.

The park’s leadership, Friends of Hemming Park, has been under scrutiny for how it spent a million city dollars over the last year.

At Sweet Pete’s downtown, kids marched up the stairs Monday to learn about candy making in the repurposed historical building, once the Seminole Club.

Across the hall, Gov. Rick Scott was awarding the owners of the business, Sweet Pete himself and wife Allison Behringer, with Governor's Business Ambassador medals for hiring 75 new employees over the last year after relocating downtown.

Peter Rummell, the powerful fundraiser who backed Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown's successful campaign in 2011, has publicly broken from the mayor.

Rummell told the editorial board for the Florida-Times Union this week that Brown "doesn’t know how to manage… he has no courage… he’s wimped out.”

Rummell has now said that he will support Florida GOP chairman,  Lenny Curry in the 2015 mayoral election. Curry told Florida Republican Party leaders Thursday that he was stepping down as state chair.

Sweet Pete's, a locally-owned candy shop in Jacksonville's Springfield neighborhood, will appear on the season finale of the CNBC reality show The Profit, which focuses on saving failing businesses.
