UPDATE THURSDAY 5 PM: The National Hurricane Center began issuing advisories on what they call Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine (or “PTC Nine”). This nomenclature is used when a system is likely to produce tropical storm conditions near land - in this case, the Bahamas - but has yet to be officially classified as a tropical storm.

Hurricane Dorian is crawling along as a Category 2 storm after spending more than a day thrashing Grand Bahama Island, where at least seven people are reported dead.

The core of the storm will "move dangerously close" to the coasts of Florida and Georgia throughout the night and into Wednesday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Hurricane Dorian is predicted to finally leave the Bahamas Tuesday after spending two days wrecking - and in many places drowning -  the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama.

Although Dorian has been downgraded to a Category 4 storm, the National Hurricane Center stills cautions residents in Grand Bahama Island — where the hurricane is battering homes with 150-mile-per-hour sustained winds — not to go outside as “winds will suddenly increase after the eye passes.”

Hurricane Dorian was nearly stationary this evening, the National Weather Service reported during its 11 p.m. update.

A slow westward to northwestward motion was expected to resume overnight and continue into early Tuesday.

It's also weakened slightly but still remains a catastrophic Category 4 storm that threatens Florida’s east coast with dangerous storm surge and inundating rains.
