Camden County, Georgia, voters on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved a sales tax extension.
Unofficial vote totals Tuesday night showed the tax passed with 78 percent support. That's with a voter turnout hovering around 7 percent.
That small fraction of the county's registered voters decided to lengthen a 1 cent special purpose local option sales tax – orSPLOST - for another six years.
The tax is expected to generate around $55 million for improvements including park upgrades, boat ramp repairs and court document preservation.
Revenue from the tax is also earmarked for capital improvement projects in the cities of Kingsland, St. Marys and Woodbine.
