Strickland started her Jacksonville career at The Jacksonville Journal, which at one point was in the same building as The Times-Union, before the Journal was eventually shuttered.

The Journal, which published its last edition in 1988, was Jacksonville's afternoon newspaper, while the Times-Union was the community's morning newspaper .

Strickland started in December 1969 at the Journal’s women’s department, as it was known back then, according to the Times-Union, which is a WJCT News partner.

She has become known through the decades for a wide range of reporting, including her many contributions to community-focused and historical reporting, including the Times-Union’s long-running Call Box feature. She's also given countless members of our community a proper send-off with her obituary reporting.

To read about some of Strickland’s work through the years - including celebrity reporting - and to hear her firsthand recollectons, see this story at Jacksonville.com.

Although editors aren't supposed to insert themselves or their opinions into a story, I’m going to make an exception here.

As someone who worked with Sandy for more than decade, I want to offer my personal congratulations to a lady who is as wonderful a colleague as she is a reporter.

Sandy, I look forward to reading many more of your stories.
