State Attorney Melissa Nelson unofficially endorsed Jacksonville sheriff's candidate T.K. Waters on Thursday.

“I've watched him and I know his work," Nelson said on First Coast Connect with Melissa Ross. "I’m proud of what we’re doing and I want it to continue, and so I’ll tell you I personally solicited him and asked him to get involved in this race because I think it matters.”

Sheriff Mike Williams is leaving office because of term limits. The 2023 race to replace him is crowded.

Two Republicans are running: Waters, who is chief of investigations for the Sheriff's Office, and retired Special Events Chief Mathew Nemeth.

Democrats are Assistant Chief Lakesha Burton; Wayne Clark, former assistant chief for the Duval County School Police; past detective Tony Cummings; and former Sheriff's Office veteran Ken Jefferson.
