Florida Has Had Eight School Shootings Since Newtown; Second-Most In Nation

Robert Nelson

Florida has had the second-highest number of school shootings among all states since the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting two years ago. A study by a pro-gun-control group records nearly 100 shootings on campuses nationwide.

The report from the group Everytown For Our Safety counts any time a gun was discharged on a school campus, including assaults, murders and suicides.

Florida schools saw eight shootings since December of 2012, plus another shooting not included in the study because it was ruled self-defense. The most recent incident was last month at the Florida State University library.

Nationwide, just under half of the shootings were at college campuses, while just over half were at K-through-12 schools.

Meanwhile, state Rep. Greg Steube (R-Sarasota) has re-filed a bill that would allow concealed weapons to be carried on college campuses.
