Tracking Tropical Storm Chantal

Meteorologist Jeff Huffman

Tropical Storm Chantal raced across the Windward Islands today and will be quickly approaching the island of Hispaniola Wednesday.

Maximum sustained winds were at 65 mph and the storm was moving swiftly to the WNW at 29 mph.

Chantal could intensity further, possibly reaching hurricane status before a projected landfall in the Dominican Republic midday Wednesday.

Models suggest Chantal will move through The Bahamas Friday and Saturday, largely missing the island of Cuba, then slow down on its approach to the Southeastern US.

Confidence is still quite low on the eventual track and strength of the storm in relation to the United States and the state of Florida. Residents from Miami to Jacksonville should closely monitor future forecasts and begin preparing for a possible tropical storm this weekend.
