Capital Report: October 6, 2023

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. It’s a time when most advocates take stock. In Florida, shelters for survivors have rarely been so full – leaving many victims with little choice but to stay with their abusers. Margie Menzel talks with advocates involved in helping victims about some of the biggest barriers and how a new state-wide effort could be part of the solution.

Increasing rents and poverty rates, along with inflation and a population boom, have created the perfect storm for a spike in homelessness in Central Florida. WMFE’s Lillian Hernández Caraballo reports, as government and community leaders scramble for solutions, transient and unsheltered people can only wait for help.

Jessie Wooden came to Miami’s Brownsville neighborhood looking for his mother’s grave. In finding it, he discovered a piece of history. Her grave marker was at Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery. It's an all-Black cemetery built at a time when South Florida was segregated in life and in death. Over the decades, the cemetery had been neglected if not forgotten. Buried there are prominent Black figures of our history – also, victims of a Jim Crow past. Jessie bought the cemetery in 2020. He joined Carolos Freeus on WLRN’s Sundial PROGRAM recently to talk about his efforts to restore and save this place.

An unforeseen burst of hiring last month has lifted hopes that the U.S. economy will prove durable once again, even as an array of threats lie ahead. Businesses across the country ramped up their hiring in September, defying surging interest rates, financial market turmoil, and the ongoing threat of a government shutdown to add the most jobs in any month since January…Florida has been one of the brightest spots for job growth despite higher interest rates designed to slow the economy. For the frist time in history Florids high school athletes may soon be able to make money off their name image and likeness; known as NIL. This week, the Florida High School Athletic Association revealed plans to WFSu about a new proposal that would allow high school athletes to participate in paid promotional deal with amjor ompanies. Adrian Andres has the latest.
