The once gray storefront of Chamblin's Uptown bookstore in downtown is getting a splash of color thanks to local artist Shaun Thurston - a process captured in this article by the Florida Times-Union.
The art is being created as part of Downtown Vision Inc.’s Laura Street Façade Grant Program, which was created two years ago as a way to urge property owners on Laura Street to improve the look of their buildings.
The fantasy-tinged mural features pieces of earth floating in a pale blue sky, and was designed by Thurston to try to avoid a purely literary theme for the bookstore.
“Other artists would be coming up with portraits of authors, bookshelves and things I wasn’t interested in seeing,” he said. “I wanted to bring something directly from my imagination onto the wall. It’s a pretty standard sci-fi theme.”
