Jacksonville native Mama Blue appeared on Friday’s First Coast Connect for a special in-studio performance of her original song, "Closer to Freedom," which is from a her new upcoming full length album.
Blue will have a special birthday performance 7 p.m. Friday, at Harmonious Monks, 320 1st St. N. in Jacksonville Beach.
After graduating from Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, Blue earned a talent scholarship to Jacksonville University.
Blue created her sound by combining Motown, blues and classical tempos, which is why her fans dub her the “Sultry Sister of Soul.”
Blue said she likes to think of herself as a conduit, connecting people's emotions through her music.
She added her life experiences are the true inspiration behind her soulful lyrics which have been heard throughout the U.S. and Europe.
“You know sometimes you feel like you're the only who's had this experience — or the only one who feels like that — and for me, when I share my music, I realize I'm not the first one to feel that way and it brings people closer together,” she said.
