Jacksonville Recognizes Jobs For Vets Businesses

Kevin Meerschaert

The city of Jacksonville on Tuesday recognized over 140 local businesses that are participating in the Jobs for Vets program. The program uses a city web site to link area veterans with local businesses. It was launched last April and officials say it has been a success.

The program was the brainchild of Deutsche Bank Managing Director Michael Fleming who ran a similar initiative for the bank on Wall Street several years ago. He approached Jacksonville's Military Affairs Director Victor Guillory just after he was appointed with the idea.

Fleming is Chair of Jacksonville's Military Veterans Coalition.

Along with area businesses local universities are partners in the program including Jacksonville University, UNF, Edward Waters FSCJ and Embry-Piddle Aeronautical University.

J-U President Tim Cost says about ten-percent of the student body isd made up of veterans and have a highly active Student Veterans of America Organization.

Kevin Meerschaert has left WJCT for new pursuits. He was the producer of First Coast Connect until October of 2018.
