With a Senate committee scheduled to take up the issue Monday, a House Democrat has proposed creating a “Small Business Saturday” sales-tax holiday in November 2018.
Rep. Kamia Brown, D-Ocoee, filed the proposal (HB 519) on Friday. ‘
The proposal is identical to a bill (SB 76), sponsored by Sen. Rene Garcia, R-Hialeah, that is on Monday's agenda of the Senate Commerce and Tourism Committee.
Under the proposal, small businesses would be able to sell items costing less than $1,000 without charging sales taxes the Saturday after Thanksgiving in 2018.
Lawmakers have considered similar proposals in the past but have not approved them. The new proposals are filed for the 2018 legislative session, which starts Jan. 9.
